English: Fronted Adverbials
Using your prior knowledge from the lesson earlier in the week, complete this activity on fronted adverbials. Continue on the story using your own creativity but ensuring that you use the fronted adverbials as instructed in the text. Write one-two paragraphs to complete the task.


Maths Directed Numbers BC/AD
Christ was born in year 0 BC means Before Christ AD means Anno Domini. Complete the activities on page 124 in BAM



Science Ecology Lesson 4
To identify birds

Task 4: Identification of birds in the ecosystem Birds are members of our food chains too and some food chains may even have two birds in it. There are some very good links to identifying birds from their sounds.

There are also some excellent identification keys to help you know which bird you saw. All you have to do is sit in a quiet spot, relax for a while and watch the birds/ listen to their sounds. You can sketch if you like or make notes on colour/size and then use your identification key to identify it. This link will lead you to a website which has many of our common Irish garden birds and if you press play underneath the description you can hear the beautiful sound of that bird. So you get a picture, a description and the sound for each bird.

Your challenge today is to identify 5 birds in your ecosystem, with pictures/photographs if possible.

​Moving to Secondary School: Subjects and Timetables
In this lesson today we are having a look at subjects and timetables. This is something you will need to become very familiar with for secondary school. A really good tip that I would have used in school was to colour code my timetable and my books and copies/folders. For example maths was red and I would mark all of my books and copies for maths with a red sticker so I could find them easily in my locker. Irish was green....etc etc. This worked so well and it made sure I had all of the books I needed in each of my classes. Have a look at some of the activities and see how you get on.

The weather is due to be quite warm today so I have given you an outdoor lesson as part of our ecology week. You are going to learn about a range of traps for studying minibeasts in your local ecosystem!

Here are today's lessons

Science Ecology Lesson 3
Task 3 Search for, and identify, some animals/insects in your ecosystem (an area you are going to work in this week for your ecology lesson). Here are some easy simple ways to catch/identify mini bugs and beasts.

1. Beating tray Simply place an old white rag/sheet or even a piece of white paper under a tree/bush/hedge. GENTLY shake the bush with a small stick. Small insects/organisms should fall onto your sheet and you can then identify them

2. Cryptozoic trap If there is a stone/block/piece of wood or anything like this lying on the ground for the past few days, and you lift it up, underneath you should find lots of woodlice, maggots, worms etc. These creatures don’t like light and will gather in dark areas. If you don’t have anything left lying around, you can place something down today and go back in a few days to see who has gathered.

3. Pitfall trap This is where you dig a small hole in the ground (maybe a flower bed where the soil is soft). Into your hole you place a paper cup or old small jar. You can place alcohol or vinegar into the bottom of the jar (WITH THE PERMISSION FROM YOUR PARENTS). Then you put a false raised camouflaged lid on top but when the bugs come crawling along they fall in. This needs to be left for a couple of days. The alcohol/vinegar kills them so you can see what you caught for making your food chain, otherwise if you catch a fly and a spider one might eat the other and you wouldn’t realise you caught them.

There are of course other ways and some of you may have kits at home for catching animals. Don’t forget if you see a fox or a rabbit while in the countryside, you can also include these in your food chain. You don’t have to catch everything to use it. Don’t forget to include birds as well. Look at the pictures attached for guidance on the traps and some mini-beasts in a common Irish ecosystem. You might find some of these mini-beasts!!

You are going to be adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers on the numberline today. I have a video attached which explains this concept. Complete BAM page 123.

Here are today's lessons

Science: Ecology Lesson 2
Task 2 Pick and identify some leaves Go outside and pick 5 or 6 different types of leaves from plants. These can include grass, trees, bushes etc. If you like you can bring something with you to identify them without having to pick them (bring your siblings or parents/guardians or below is a picture of common plants/weeds you might find. There are also many identification keys online. There is an app you can download onto an iPod or phone or computer called Leafsnap – plant identification. This allows you to take a photo of the leaf and it identifies it for you. You can use this at any time when you go for a walk and you see a plant you don’t recognise.



English: Sentence Building: Fronted Adverbials
Today's lesson is on using something called fronted adverbials. This might sound complicated, but you actually use them all the time. They are used to expand you sentences and give you more information about the setting. For example: 'The boy opened the door.' If we add a fronted adverbial to this it can give us context. For example. Suddenly, the boy opened the door and 'As quiet as a mouse, the boy opened the door.' The fronted adverbial in each of these sentences changes the meaning. I want you to watch the short video attached. Don't get to caught up in the definition just use the video to figure out what they are (I know the alien is a bit naff but the learning is useful so just stick with it) The sheets I have attached explain it further and there is a short activity at the end of each page to be completed.

Science Ecology Lesson 1

This week our theme is Ecology which is looking at different organisms in our environment and how they relate to each other. 

We have such a huge diversity (many different types) of living organisms in our back gardens that we don’t even know about. Thankfully these organisms (living things) have not been affected by the Corona virus and are thriving in this fabulous weather. 

We are going to try and identify some organisms from our back garden, local forest/woodland, playing field etc.
When we have that done we are going to try build some simple food chains (a flow chart that tells us what each living thing eats) and food webs (linking our food chains together) from whatever organisms we catch and identify. 
Food chains show how energy flows/passes through our ecosystem. Food chains have to start with a plant because plants make their own food  (by using the sun’s energy) and we depend on these plants for our food (or on the animals who eat the plants so when you eat big juicy burger, you depended on the cow to provide that energy for you, the cow depended on the grass for his energy, and the grass depended on the sun for its energy. Therefore the energy from everything we eat has come from the sun.
Can you work out how the energy in a Mars bar, or a packet of crisps, came from the sun??
Well the energy in the mars comes from its large content of glucose which is a sugar which came from the sugar beet plant, which made its food by photosynthesis using energy from the sun.

Crisps come from potatoes, which were plants which made their food using energy from the sun!!

Task 1  What is a food chain/food web

Look at the short clip on food chains and food webs to get an idea what we are going to be working on outside later in the week

Art and Music
Today I want you to listen to an incredible piece of music called 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst. It is a symphony with each of the movements representing a different planet. This is a link to the full orchestral piece but I want you to pick one planet, listen to the piece of music based around it and create an artistic piece using this as inspiration. You can also use your prior knowledge of the planets to help you. Think about colour, line, shape, tone and atmosphere when you are creating. Don't just do the first planet you come across. Each yellow line is a new movement so listen to a few before you make your choice. Listen to the piece a few times close your eyes and see what imagery comes to you as you listen. You have free reign on your creativity. See what the music inspires you to create! Have fun!

​English/Science: An Explanation of the solar system
Write an explanation with the following title 'What makes up Our Solar System?' This is a two day assignment so you may want to get your research and plan together today and write it tomorrow. You must include the following sub-headings: What is the solar system? The Sun, The Planets, The Moons and The Stars. You may add any extra sub headings you wish I have attached some information to help you but feel free to do your own research.

Maths: Directed Numbers
This is a pretty straight forward chapter at the start. The main learning point that I want you to take from the beginning of this chapter is that you understand what a negative number is. I have attached a short video for you to watch. Complete page 120 in BAM.
